Simmering discord in the All Progressives Congress (APC) boiled over this week as a senior National Working Committee (NWC) figure warned of an impending ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu regarding FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The controversy centers on Wike’s aggressive political plays in Rivers State, where he continues to clash with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his successor and a recent APC convert.

In an anonymous interview with The Guardian, the NWC member stated.

“We may ask the President to choose between us and his FCT minister if Wike keeps acting like he’s the sole guardian of the President’s interests in Rivers or elsewhere.

He’s not even a party member.” This bold stance reflects growing alarm that Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyalist despite his ministerial role, is undermining APC’s grip on the oil-rich South-South state ahead of 2027 polls.

The trigger was Wike’s recent vow that Fubara won’t clinch a second term.

APC strategists view this as sabotage, arguing a non-member like Wike cannot dictate terms in a state where the party eyes consolidation.

Rivers, with its vast resources and voter base, remains pivotal for APC’s national ambitions.

Wike Labeled Nigeria’s Most Unfortunate Politician

Echoing this sentiment, former PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Eddy Olafeso labeled Wike as “the most unfortunate politician in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.”

In a Guardian interview, Olafeso credited Fubara’s swift APC alignment for outmaneuvering Wike.

He noted APC leaders have anointed Fubara as their Rivers chief, sidelining Wike, with some even pushing for his ministerial ouster.

Olafeso highlighted how Fubara’s party switch preempted Wike’s moves, leaving the minister isolated.

“APC stalwarts showed him the exit by backing Fubara first,” he said.

In-Depth Analysis: Navigating PDP Defections and Party Loyalty in Nigerian Politics

This rift exposes the fragile alliances defining President Tinubu’s broad coalition.

Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister in 2023 was a masterstroke, securing PDP defectors’ support post-2023 elections.

Yet, his Rivers dominance, rooted in godfatherism, clashes with APC’s push for organic growth.

The NWC’s threat signals a tipping point: tolerating Wike risks alienating grassroots loyalists, especially after Fubara’s impeachment saga and Supreme Court validation of his mandate.

Politically, Rivers is a prize. Producing 20% of Nigeria’s oil, it sways South-South votes crucial for Tinubu’s 2027 bid. APC’s 2023 gubernatorial loss there, despite national victory, haunts strategists.

Fubara’s defection flipped the script, but Wike’s interference could fracture this gain, echoing past godfather-godson feuds like those in Anambra or Akwa Ibom.

    Olafeso’s critique underscores defection dynamics.

Wike’s 2024 APC flirtation never materialized into membership, leaving him as an “outsider” wielding undue influence.

This mirrors historical patterns: defectors like Fubara thrive by fully embedding, while holdouts like Wike face backlash.

APC’s recognition of Fubara as state leader formalizes this shift, potentially forcing Wike’s hand, defect fully or exit the cabinet.

For Tinubu, the dilemma is acute.

Sacking Risks FCT Projects, PDP Moderates; Backing Threatens APC Unity

Sacking Wike could unravel FCT projects and alienate PDP moderates; backing him risks APC implosion.

Data from past cycles shows internal squabbles cost parties seats, e.g., PDP’s 2015 fractures.

Here, polls suggest APC leads Rivers by 10 points if unified, per recent NOI surveys, but Wike’s shadow drops it to parity.

Economically, stability matters. Rivers’ unrest disrupts investments; resolved rifts could boost oil output amid global energy shifts.

Broader reforms, like the Electoral Act’s anti-defection clauses, might prevent such dramas, promoting ideological parties over personality cults.

Tinubu’s response will test his balancing act.

A quiet mediation, as in past crises, seems likely, but NWC pressure demands action.

Ultimately, prioritizing party machinery over individual allies could solidify APC’s dominance, setting a precedent for coalition management in Africa’s largest democracy.

    Strategic Outlook for 2027 Elections

Looking ahead, APC must reconcile these tensions to counter opposition resurgence.

PDP, regrouping under Atiku Abubakar, eyes Rivers as a comeback beachhead.

Wike’s isolation weakens his bargaining power, potentially paving Fubara’s path while bolstering Tinubu’s regional outreach.

Positive steps include APC’s zonal congresses emphasizing inclusivity.

If mishandled, though, this could spawn parallel structures, diluting votes.

Lessons from 2019’s Zamfara crisis, where infighting nullified wins, loom large.

    • Emeka N. (Rivers): APC should prioritize unity for development. Wike’s experience is valuable, but party rules matter. Let’s focus on progress.
    • Fatima K. (Abuja): Interesting analysis on defections. Fubara’s move was smart politics. Hope for peaceful resolutions in Rivers.
    • David O. (Lagos): Tinubu has handled coalitions well before. NWC’s warning is a wake-up call for discipline. Good read!
