The political drama over Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a sharp turn on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) wasted no time in condemning the move, calling it a reflection of personal ambition rather than ideological conviction.

Atiku Abubakar departure signifies a shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

He is expected to forge closer ties with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This development has stirred a heated response from the ruling party.

Atiku Abandons PDP Amid Internal Turmoil

Atiku Abubakar claimed his resignation came after “irreconcilable differences” within the PDP.

He framed the exit as an ideological and strategic decision.

However, APC spokesperson in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, dismissed this explanation.

Oladejo said Atiku’s defection confirms what many have long suspected: the PDP is in internal collapse.

He also accused Atiku of lacking political consistency, suggesting his actions follow a pattern of self-serving calculations rather than genuine political principles.

    Personal Pursuit, Not Political Conviction

In a statement, Oladejo described Atiku’s move as ambition “without principle.”

He argued that Atiku’s resignation was driven by a relentless personal pursuit, not by ideological realignment or a vision for national progress.

“The APC stands as the only party delivering real governance, economic gains, and solid infrastructure,” Oladejo declared, aiming to contrast APC’s record with PDP’s internal chaos.

APC Reaffirms Commitment to Governance and Unity

Oladejo used the occasion to reassure Lagos APC loyalists of the party’s commitment to national unity and sustainable development.

He urged grassroots supporters to remain unified and active to secure electoral victory in 2027.

He emphasized the importance of continuity and stability, stating, “Victory depends on our unity, past performance, and focus on people-centred development.”

    Atiku’s “Recycled Politics” Criticized

The APC spokesman criticized Atiku’s political maneuvering as part of what he called “recycled politics” that fail to offer Nigerians real alternatives.

Oladejo warned that political instability often follows Atiku, implying that his move to the ADC will neither strengthen the opposition nor challenge APC’s hold on power.

“Nigerians deserve visionary leadership, not theatrical comebacks.

APC is prepared to lead and win,” he added, positioning the ruling party as the only credible option.

What Atiku’s Defection Means for Nigerian Politics

Atiku’s resignation signals cracks in PDP’s once dominant opposition role.

His expected alliance with the ADC suggests efforts to build a broader coalition, attempting to consolidate opposition forces against APC’s perceived political hegemony.

However, Oladejo’s reaction reflects the APC’s strategy to paint this new coalition as lacking coherence and motivated by ambition rather than ideology.

The Underlying Battle for Political Relevance

Political observers see Atiku’s resignation as part of a wider struggle for relevance among Nigeria’s political heavyweights.

The move could realign opposition politics but also risks fragmenting votes if the opposition fails to present a united front.

Questions remain about Atiku’s long-term political vision. Critics doubt whether his switch advances any meaningful agenda beyond personal power ambitions.

    APC’s Confidence Despite Opposition Shakeup

Despite the opposition’s realignments, APC appears confident.

Oladejo’s statements highlight the party’s narrative of stability, development, and governance as their rallying points.

APC’s challenge will be to maintain this narrative amid swirling dissent and evolving opposition formations.

Success hinges on delivering on promises and convincing voters that APC remains the best choice.

    Ambition vs Ideology

Atiku Abubakar resignation and the APC’s fierce rebuttal encapsulate Nigeria’s persistent political drama where ambition often overshadows ideology.

The unfolding contest ahead of 2027 will test the maturity of Nigeria’s democracy and political actors.

Whether opposition figures like Atiku focus on genuine policy change or political survival will influence the electoral landscape profoundly.

For now, APC’s narrative is clear: they paint Atiku’s move as opportunistic, reaffirming their position as the party of governance and unity.

The opposition faces the daunting task of proving otherwise in the eyes of Nigerian voters.
