Brutal Church Massacre in Komanda Kills 49 Christians

In a harrowing attack on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at least 49 Christians lost their lives in the village of Komanda, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Victims, mostly Catholics, were attacked by ADF jihadists during a Silver Jubilee prayer vigil at Blessed Marie-Clémentine Anuarite Nengapeta Catholic Church.

The militants launched a ruthless assault inside the church.

Using firearms and machetes to kill worshipers, including nine children who were reportedly decapitated. 

Those who tried to escape were chased down and brutally murdered.

Several children were taken captive during the attack. 

The violence extended beyond the church compound as houses and shops were looted and set ablaze by the attackers before they withdrew into the surrounding bushland.

Night of Horror: Attack Details and Victim Accounts

The attack occurred around 1 A.M. while the faithful participated in a prayer vigil connected to a youth formation movement called the Eucharistic Crusade. 

According to eyewitnesses and church officials, the assailants ambushed the congregation, killing many inside the church and within the adjacent areas.

Father Marcelo Oliveira, a missionary present in Congo for many years, described the harrowing event.

 “The rebels entered the church and murdered a large number of children, both inside the building and in the compound.” 

The deaths were caused by gunfire and machete wounds. 

Reports indicate some bodies were found burned, underscoring the extreme brutality of the attack.

Mass Grave and Mourning: The Aftermath

The United Nations’ peacekeeping mission in Congo, MONUSCO, quickly responded. 

Earth-moving equipment was deployed to dig a mass grave for the victims. 

Funerals for the slain were held on Monday amid widespread grief and despair within the local community. 

Church leaders and humanitarian organizations condemned the attack as a heinous violation of human rights and a war crime.

Pope Leo expressed deep sorrow in a telegram, offering prayers and condolences to the families and the wider Christian community. 

He called the atrocity a grave invitation to renew efforts toward peace, reconciliation, and human development in the troubled region.

The ADF, originally a Ugandan rebel group, has entrenched itself in Congo’s mineral-rich eastern provinces. 

This violent faction aligned with the Islamic State has been systematically attacking civilians, especially Christians. 

Reports show over 80 villagers were killed in related attacks in the region in July alone.

Despite peace accords and military responses, the ADF continues to operate with impunity. 

No arrests have been made following the recent massacre, and the group’s capability to strike remains unchecked. 

Villagers have suffered repeated atrocities, with many displaced and living in fear.

Christian charities and advocacy groups urge global powers, including the United States, to exert political and military pressure to protect vulnerable communities in Congo.
