Masked gunmen burst into a joyous traditional wedding ceremony in a rural Nigerian community Saturday night, unleashing a hail of bullets that kill 3 at least three people and wounded several others, including women and children, witnesses and local leaders said.

The assault unfolded in Akunza, a tight-knit Migili-speaking enclave in the Ashige district of Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, about 200 kilometers southwest of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

What began as a celebration of love and cultural heritage descended into chaos as attackers opened fire indiscriminately, sending terrified guests fleeing into the darkness.

A youth leader from the community, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, provided a harrowing firsthand account to wahalaupdate.

“The attack happened right in the middle of the wedding ceremony,” he said, his voice still trembling from the ordeal.

“People started running in different directions, everyone scattering like leaves in a storm.

Gunfire was everywhere. At least kill 3 lives that night.”

The victims included two men and one woman, according to the youth leader, though police have yet to release official identities.

Several others suffered gunshot wounds and injuries from the frantic escape, with women and children among the most vulnerable.

“The injured are receiving treatment at a local health facility,” he added.

“But our medical resources here are stretched thin. Some are in critical condition.”

Nasarawa State police spokesperson Ramhan Nansel confirmed the incident in a statement Sunday but provided few details.

“We received a distress call about an armed attack during a social event in Akunza,” Nansel said.

“Our operatives responded promptly, but the gunmen had already fled the scene.

Investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances and apprehend the perpetrators.”

As of Monday evening, police announced no arrests, and the motive remained unclear.

    A Community Under Siege

Akunza’s residents described a scene of utter pandemonium.

Wedding festivities were in full swing, drums beating rhythmically, guests adorned in vibrant traditional attire, and food shared communally under the stars, when the gunmen arrived on motorcycles around 9 p.m.

“They came from nowhere, shouting and shooting,” recounted Amina Ibrahim, a 42-year-old guest who escaped with her two young children.

“I grabbed my babies and ran into the bush. I don’t know how we survived.”

The attack has plunged the community into mourning and fear.

Funerals for the deceased began Monday, drawing somber crowds to a makeshift mourning ground.

“This was supposed to be a day of happiness,” said community elder Joseph Akpa.

“Now, we bury our own. Our children are traumatized. No one feels safe anymore.”

Nasarawa State, nestled in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has long been a flashpoint for violence.

The region sits at the volatile crossroads of the country’s Muslim north and Christian south, where longstanding disputes over farmland, grazing routes, and ethnic identities frequently erupt into bloodshed.

Banditry, characterized by heavily armed groups raiding villages for ransom, cattle, or revenge, has surged in recent years, claiming thousands of lives across northern and central Nigeria.

    The Rising Tide of Banditry

Experts trace the roots of these attacks to a toxic mix of poverty, unemployment, and the proliferation of small arms, exacerbated by climate change-driven farmer-herder clashes.

“Bandits in Nasarawa and neighboring states like Plateau and Benue operate with impunity,” said Kabiru Adamu, a security analyst at the Abuja-based Centre for Democracy and Development.

They target soft spots like markets, schools, and now weddings because crowds pack them densely with poor defenses.

Data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) underscores the crisis.

Nigeria recorded over 1,200 bandit-related incidents in 2025 alone, up 15% from the previous year, with Nasarawa accounting for dozens.

Just last month, gunmen kidnapped 40 travelers on the Lafia-Abuja highway, only 30 kilometers from Akunza.

In October, a similar raid in nearby Keana kill 3 and displaced hundreds.

Government responses have been criticized as reactive and under-resourced.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration launched Operation Whirl Stroke in the Middle Belt last year, deploying joint military-police units.

Yet, locals complain of inadequate patrols in remote areas like Akunza.

“The police station is 20 kilometers away,” the youth leader noted.

“By the time help arrives, the bandits are long gone with their loot.”

Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule condemned the attack in a televised address Sunday, vowing “decisive action.”

“We will not allow terrorists to turn our state into a war zone,” he said, announcing a N10 million reward for information leading to the gunmen’s capture.

State emergency services have dispatched medical teams and relief supplies to Akunza, but residents demand more.

A permanent security outpost and economic investments to address youth joblessness, which fuels recruitment into bandit gangs.

    Broader Implications for Nigeria

This wedding massacre is more than an isolated tragedy; it reflects Nigeria’s deepening security quagmire.

The West African giant, Africa’s most populous nation, grapples with multiple insurgencies.

Boko Haram in the northeast, separatist unrest in the southeast, and banditry in the northwest and center.

Over 10,000 civilians have died in bandit attacks since 2019, according to the Council on Foreign Relations, with kidnappings surging as a lucrative enterprise.

International observers warn of ripple effects.

“Insecurity deters investment and exacerbates food insecurity in the Middle Belt, a key agricultural hub,” said Human Rights Watch researcher Ossai Okoroafor.

“Communities like Akunza are paying the price for systemic failures.”

On the ground, resilience shines through grief.

Wedding survivors have formed vigilante patrols, armed with machetes and local intelligence.

“We can’t wait for the government forever,” said youth leader. “But we pray for peace.”

As investigations continue, questions linger: Was this random banditry, ethnic retribution, or something more targeted?

Forensic teams combed the site Monday, recovering spent shells from AK-47 rifles, a hallmark of bandit weaponry kill 3.

Ballistic analysis could yield leads, but in Nigeria’s underfunded security apparatus, breakthroughs are rare.

For the bride and groom, whose names locals withheld out of fear, the dream wedding became a nightmare. “They survived, but their joy is shattered,” Ibrahim said. “Pray for us.”

Nigeria’s government faces mounting pressure to overhaul its security strategy ahead of 2026 elections.

Until then, communities like Akunza huddle in fear, wondering who might be next.

Chinedu Asadu in Lagos contributed to this report.
