Manchester United have sacked manager Rúben Amorim.
WahalaUpdate gathered that the decision was made by the club this morning and is effective immediately.
It comes directly after Amorim’s public rant yesterday, where he unleashed a fierce criticism of the club’s leadership and direction.
While results had been poor, that public outburst was the final straw for United’s hierarchy.
He has already left the training ground.
Meanwhile, the club has appointed former club captain and current Technical Director Darren Fletcher as interim manager until the end of the season.
The decision, announced by the club in a terse statement late this afternoon, follows a string of disastrous results that saw United’s season unravel.
Despite a promising start, Amorim’s project has collapsed in recent months, with the team exiting European competition early and falling out of contention for the Premier League’s top four.
A humiliating defeat this past weekend is believed to have been the final straw for the new ownership and football leadership.
Rúben Amorim’s tenure, which began with significant fanfare less than two years ago, ends in disappointment.
Hailed as a progressive, tactical thinker upon his arrival from Sporting CP, he ultimately failed to impose a consistent identity or deliver results commensurate with the club’s investment and expectations.
The club’s statement thanked him for his service but cited “a divergence in footballing vision and unacceptable recent performances” as reasons for the change.
Stepping into the breach is a familiar face: Darren Fletcher.
The 40-year-old Scot, a beloved figure who made over 340 appearances for the club during his playing career, has been serving as the club’s Technical Director, working closely on recruitment and long-term strategy. While he holds a UEFA Pro License, this will be his first hands-on managerial role.
Football Director, John Murtough, stated: “This was not a decision taken lightly. We are grateful to Rúben for his efforts, but we felt a change was imperative to salvage our season.
“Darren Fletcher embodies the heart and soul of Manchester United. He understands the standards required here, commands the respect of the dressing room, and has a deep connection with our supporters. Our immediate focus is on stability, rebuilding confidence, and securing the best possible finish to prepare for the future.”
The appointment of Fletcher is widely seen as a “safe pair of hands” move, designed to steady the ship and reconnect the team with the club’s culture during a turbulent period.
His intimate knowledge of the squad’s strengths and weaknesses, built from his directorial role, is considered a key advantage.
Initial reaction from the fanbase has been mixed.
Many welcome the return of a club legend to the dugout, hoping he can restore fight and pride to the team.
Others, however, question the lack of top-level managerial experience and see it as a regressive step, underscoring the club’s continued lack of a clear long-term sporting plan.
Darren Fletcher’s first task will be a daunting one: a crucial Manchester derby against rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this coming weekend.
The remainder of the season will now serve as an audition for Fletcher, while the club’s hierarchy begins what is expected to be a rigorous and global search for a permanent manager this summer.
