Two years before his death, former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari made a heartfelt public plea for forgiveness.

This appeal has resurfaced following his passing in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

    Buhari’s Reflective Speech in 2023

On April 21, 2023, Buhari addressed dignitaries, ministers, and residents at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during an Eid-el-Fitr homage.

With just over a month left in office, he delivered what became one of his most personal speeches as president.

He thanked Nigerians for the privilege to serve two terms from 2015 to 2023.

More importantly, he sought forgiveness for any harm caused during his tenure.

“God gave me an incredible opportunity to serve the country.

We are all humans. If I have hurt some people along the line of my service to the country, I ask that they pardon me,” Buhari said.

This plea was repeated with emphasis: “All those that I have hurt, I ask that they pardon me.”

A Lifetime of Service and Struggle

Buhari reflected on over four decades of service to Nigeria.

From a young military officer to military Head of State (1983-1985), and later as a democratically elected president, his journey was marked by trials and resilience.

He recounted his imprisonment following a coup overthrow and three failed presidential bids before his triumphant return in 2015.

“I dared the politicians and ended up at the Supreme Court three times.

They laughed at me, and I responded, ‘God dey’,” he recalled.

He credited technology, especially the Permanent Voter Card (PVC), for his eventual success, saying, “The fraudulent people became unemployed.”

Enduring Criticism as Part of Leadership

Buhari acknowledged the heavy criticism he faced throughout his years in power.

He accepted it as part of the burden of leadership.

“I think it is a good coincidence for me to say goodbye to you, and thank you for tolerating me for almost eight years,” he said.

His words now echo with a new weight, as Nigerians reflect on his complex legacy amid mourning.

    Mixed Legacy: Forgiveness or Accountability?

While Buhari’s plea for pardon sounds humble, many Nigerians remain divided over his legacy.

His administration was marked by economic struggles, security crises, and allegations of human rights abuses.

Critics argue that forgiveness should not overshadow accountability.

They question whether Buhari’s leadership truly served the nation or deepened its problems.

Supporters, however, view his plea as a genuine act of humility and a call for national healing.

    The Transition to Tinubu’s Administration

Buhari handed over power to Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 29, 2023, after completing two terms.

The transition was peaceful but left Nigeria grappling with unresolved issues.

Tinubu’s government now faces the challenge of addressing the gaps left by Buhari’s tenure while uniting a divided nation.

    Buhari’s Death: A Nation Reflects

Buhari’s death in London, where he sought medical treatment, has stirred emotions across Nigeria.

His final years were marked by health challenges and public speculation.

As the nation mourns, his 2023 plea for forgiveness resurfaces as a poignant reminder of the man behind the presidency.

    What Nigerians Should Remember

Buhari’s call for pardon invites Nigerians to reflect on leadership, forgiveness, and the price of governance.

It challenges citizens to balance critique with compassion.

Whether Nigerians choose to forgive or demand justice, Buhari’s legacy will remain a subject of intense debate.
