Controversial Nigerian entertainer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has taken the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to court.

The suit, filed in Abuja on July 9, 2025, drags the agency for declaring him wanted over shocking allegations.

Speed Darlington is demanding ₦3 billion in damages for what he calls unlawful and defamatory actions.

NAPTIP Declares Speed Darlington Wanted, Sparks Outrage

On June 27, 2025, NAPTIP publicly declared Speed Darlington wanted.

The agency posted his name and photo under the headline “Wanted by NAPTIP” in major newspapers and online platforms nationwide.

The notice accused the entertainer of horrific crimes including rape, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.

The notice followed a viral Instagram live video in which Speed Darlington allegedly admitted to having sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl.

The agency’s response was swift and unyielding, summoning him to their Abuja headquarters for questioning.

Entertainer Defies Summons and Demands Pay

Speed Darlington’s reaction was brazen and defiant.

In videos posted online, he denied any wrongdoing and called the allegations baseless.

He demanded a ₦2.5 million appearance fee plus round-trip tickets for himself and his personal assistant to “honour” the invitation.

“I’m not coming. I have not committed any crime.

All I did was speak,” he boldly declared. He questioned NAPTIP’s evidence and motives, accusing the agency of chasing “social media clout.”

He mocked the idea of cooperating without compensation, turning what should be a solemn investigation into a spectacle.

Legal Battle Launched at Federal High Court Abuja

Represented by a consortium of female lawyers, Speed Darlington filed suit against NAPTIP for defamation and unlawful damage to his reputation.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2025, demands ₦3 billion in damages.

The court papers also seek a perpetual injunction barring the agency and its agents from enforcing the June 27 wanted notice.

The entertainer insists the notice destroyed his personal safety and tarnished his name without basis.

His legal team argues that NAPTIP acted recklessly by publicly branding him a criminal without sufficient proof or proper legal process.

    Background: Viral Video Sparks Investigation

The controversy began in late May 2025, when Speed Darlington posted an Instagram live session.

In it, he allegedly confessed to having sex with a 15-year-old girl and joked about the encounter, mentioning he “disvirgined her” and gave her 2,000 naira.

Public outrage forced NAPTIP’s hand. The agency summoned him on May 30, but Speed Darlington failed to appear.

When he requested to reschedule, NAPTIP declined, setting a final date of June 2 which he again ignored.

The agency escalated the case, declaring him wanted and placing him on an international watch list, alerting Interpol.

NAPTIP Wages War: Interpol, Bounty, and International Notices

NAPTIP intensified its pursuit by collaborating with Nigeria Immigration Service, Police, DSS, and Interpol.

Reports emerged that a ₦50 million bounty could be placed on Speed Darlington for apprehension.

Vincent Adekoye, NAPTIP’s Chief Press Officer, described Speed Darlington as a “dangerous individual” due to his alleged admissions.

He urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

    Public Reaction Splits Opinion

The case exposed sharp divisions on social media and among legal experts.

Victims’ rights groups demand strict justice, highlighting the seriousness of allegations involving minors.

However, some commentators argue that Speed’s outrageous statements fall short of proof and that freedom of speech and due process should protect him from premature condemnation.

Nigerian lawyer Ayo Shonaiya remarked that “irresponsible talk” without evidence isn’t legally a crime.

Still, few defend Speed’s flippant attitude toward such grave accusations.

Entertainer Claims Video Was for Clout and Entertainment

In later posts, Speed Darlington attempted to soften his stance.

He apologized for possible misunderstandings and described the video as a publicity stunt to promote his music.

He insisted he would never engage in unlawful acts and begged the public to see the matter as blown out of proportion. His apology, however, did little to quell the storm.

    Speed Darlington’s Parallel Legal Troubles

The entertainer’s battle with the law is not new.

He also filed a ₦300 million fundamental rights suit against Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged unlawful detention connected to cyberstalking and defamation charges.

That case is ongoing tangled in the complicated mesh of Nigeria’s justice and celebrity culture.

The Bigger Picture: Freedom vs. Accountability

This explosive case presents uncomfortable questions about celebrity culture, responsibility, and legal boundaries in Nigeria.

Should entertainers be held to account for reckless speech?

Or does the state risk setting a dangerous precedent by flexing heavy-handed powers against provocative artists?

Speed Darlington’s lawsuit challenges the government’s handling of the case, accusing NAPTIP of using its authority to ruin reputations without fair trial.

    Courtroom Drama Awaits

The Federal High Court in Abuja will soon hear arguments that test the limits of free expression, public safety, and legal fairness in Nigeria.

Speed Darlington’s ₦3 billion lawsuit against NAPTIP signals fierce resistance from the entertainer.

Whether this legal battle exposes institutional flaws or shields reckless behavior depends on how the court balances evidence, rights, and public interest.
