Introduction: Trump’s Bold Ceasefire Announcement Sparks Controversy

On June 23, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump stunned the world by announcing a “complete and total ceasefire” between Iran and Israel, claiming it would end what he called a “12-day war.”

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the ceasefire would begin around 4:00 a.m.

GMT Tuesday, with Iran halting attacks first, followed by Israel 12 hours later, culminating in a formal end to hostilities after 24 hours.

Trump wrote, “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE.”

He congratulated both nations for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence”.

And hailed the agreement as a breakthrough that “could have saved the Middle East from years of destruction.”

He ended with a sweeping message of unity: “God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”

Tehran Denies Any Formal Ceasefire Agreement

Almost immediately, Iran pushed back hard against Trump’s announcement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took to his verified X account to deny that any formal ceasefire deal had been reached.

He insisted that “there is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations” and reiterated that Israel had initiated the conflict.

Araghchi added a conditional statement: “Provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 a.m. Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards.

The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later.”

This stark contradiction exposed a major diplomatic disconnect.

While Trump claimed a binding ceasefire, Tehran framed its compliance as conditional and not yet finalized.

    Israel’s Silence Fuels Speculation

As of press time, Israel has not issued any official statement confirming or denying Trump’s ceasefire announcement.

This silence has fueled speculation that the Israeli government may be reluctant to publicly endorse a deal perceived as conceding to Iranian demands or that internal disagreements persist.

White House sources indicated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been consulted and agreed to the ceasefire on the condition that Iran stops its attacks.

However, without formal Israeli confirmation, the ceasefire’s legitimacy remains in doubt.

Escalating Conflict: From Airstrikes to Missile Barrages

The conflict ignited on June 13, when Israel reportedly launched airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities.

Tehran retaliated with missile attacks on Israeli territory and, notably, on a U.S. military base in Qatar.

On June 22, Iran fired missiles at the U.S. base in Qatar, which were intercepted by Qatari air defenses.

Iran described the strike as measured retaliation against “unlawful aggression” by the United States.

Qatar condemned the missile attack as a “blatant infringement of sovereignty.”

Several Gulf nations restricted their airspace amid fears of further escalation.

The violence has been deadly. Iranian sources report over 400 fatalities, including at least 13 children, and more than 3,000 wounded.

Israeli officials report at least 24 deaths from Iranian strikes.

    Behind-the-Scenes Diplomacy: Qatar’s Role and U.S. Negotiations

Trump’s ceasefire announcement followed intense behind-the-scenes diplomacy involving U.S. officials and Qatar as a mediator.

Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff reportedly engaged in direct and indirect negotiations with Iranian representatives.

Trump himself maintained direct communication with Netanyahu and the Emir of Qatar, Tam bin Hamad Al Thani, who played a pivotal role in brokering the fragile agreement.

The diplomatic efforts aimed to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a wider regional war.

Controversy over Trump’s Claims and Diplomatic Credibility

Critics have questioned the timing and veracity of Trump’s ceasefire announcement.

The Iranian denial and Israel’s silence suggest that the “agreement” may be more aspirational than real.

Diplomats familiar with the situation described the rapid developments over the past 24 hours as “startling” and “unprecedented,” underscoring the fragile nature of the ceasefire talks.

Some analysts argue that Trump’s public declaration was premature and possibly politically motivated to claim credit for brokering peace in a volatile region.

Others warn that without clear commitments from both sides,

The ceasefire could collapse, plunging the Middle East into deeper chaos.

    Humanitarian Toll and Global Alarm

The 12-day conflict has inflicted severe civilian suffering.

Humanitarian agencies warn of rising casualties, displacement, and destruction in both Iran and Israel.

International powers have called for restraint, fearing that the conflict could ignite a broader regional war involving multiple countries.

The world watches anxiously as the ceasefire’s implementation hangs in the balance.

    The Fragile Road Ahead

The ceasefire is scheduled to be phased in over 24 hours, starting with Iran.

If successful, it could mark the official end of the “12-day war.”

However, Tehran’s insistence on conditional compliance and Israel’s lack of official confirmation cast doubt on the ceasefire’s durability.

Observers caution that the situation remains volatile.

Any misstep or renewed aggression could reignite hostilities with devastating consequences.

The coming days will reveal whether diplomacy can hold or if the Middle East faces yet another cycle of violence.
