The political tension within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State intensified as Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the sole PDP member in the National Assembly from the state, issued a dramatic warning about the party’s fate.

Speaking at a press conference in Owerri, Ugochinyere claimed that the PDP in Imo would collapse rapidly if he withdrew his support and structure.

Ugochinyere’s Political Clout and Party Crisis

Ugochinyere asserted, “I have a structure that has a member in every family in Ideato Federal Constituency.

I won my election while in exile. If there is anyone that should be begged, it is me.

If I pull my structure today, PDP will collapse. I’m not boasting about it.”

His statement paints a picture of a politician who sees himself as indispensable to the party’s survival in the state.

The lawmaker has accused leading figures within the Imo PDP.

Notably the embattled National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, of unfair treatment and attempts to undermine him.

Ugochinyere’s warnings of a possible exit from the party if maltreatment continues underline deep internal divisions.

His exact words: “Have we been treated fairly? No.

Are we worried about them? No. Are we going to move? Yes, if they don’t treat us fairly.”

Controversy Over Party Leadership and Performance

Ugochinyere did not hold back criticism of Senator Anyanwu’s leadership and 2023 governorship campaign.

Calling it “the worst performance ever for the PDP in the state.”

He implied that the failures under the current leadership threaten the party’s relevance and future in Imo.

This internal strife exposes a fractured party struggling for cohesion ahead of critical elections.

While Ugochinyere claims a loyal base, others within the PDP have reportedly sought his suspension and expulsion over allegations of indiscipline and anti-party activities.

Though the National Working Committee has nullified such actions as inconsistent with party rules.

Insecurity Crisis A Sharp Critique of State Government

Ugochinyere also highlighted growing insecurity in Imo State, particularly in his constituency.

He pointed to the recent massacre in Arondizuogu, where approximately 26 people were killed, as proof of government failure to protect its citizens.

“The security and protection of lives is the primary responsibility of government.

By now, I expected the state governor would have visited Ideato.

We expected relief materials by now.

You don’t need to like my face before you show leadership,” he said, expressing frustration with the state’s apparent neglect.

He has called for the empowerment of local vigilante groups as a stopgap to the rising violence.

Ugochinyere disclosed that he personally donated ₦5 million and is rallying support to assist families who lost loved ones in the attacks.

A move signaling both sympathy and political positioning amidst crisis.

Environmental Decay Adds to Constituency Woes

Apart from insecurity, Ugochinyere lamented the worsening gully erosion ravaging Ideato North and South communities.

Naming places like Urualla, Umueshi, Amanato, Osina, and Umuobom as severely affected.

He criticized the withdrawal of the World Bank from intervention projects in these areas.

Implying that external support is drying up while local government remains inactive.

The degradation threatens livelihoods and amplifies public grievances against the regional administration.

Political Fallout: PDP’s Fragile Unity Exposed

This public clash exposes the factionalism eating away at PDP’s foundation in Imo.

Ugochinyere’s influence, marked by a grassroots network, starkly contrasts with the embattled state party leadership.

Creating a power struggle with potential to destabilize the opposition’s stance against the ruling party.

While many hope Ugochinyere’s leadership signals a path to party renewal.

Others view his confrontational style as deepening divisions.

The implosion risk is real, especially as the party tries to marshal strength for the 2027 elections.

Criticism of PDP’s Handling of Internal Disputes

The party faces criticism for its inconsistent disciplinary measures and failure to manage key players effectively.

The suspension and eventual nullification of Ugochinyere’s expulsion revealed rifts in procedural fairness and command.

Observers suggest the internal chaos may serve the ruling APC well.

Which reportedly regards PDP’s self-destruction in Imo as a political windfall.

The PDP’s inability to consolidate around its leaders undermines its credibility and electoral prospects.

What This Means for Imo People

Beyond politics, the issues Ugochinyere spotlights security breakdown and environmental disasterdirectly affect the residents of Ideato.

The perceived neglect by state authorities compounded by alleged party disunity impacts governance and quality of life.

Ugochinyere’s donation and mobilization of support for victims show a hands-on but politically charged response.

Positioning him as both a critic and an alternative voice to the current administration’s failure to address urgent matters.
