The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari has sparked a flood of reactions across Nigeria since July 13, 2025.

Among the most notable is the heartfelt tribute from his former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

He revealed what he believes Nigerians will miss most about Buhari, a figure whose legacy remains deeply divisive.

    Buhari’s Death in London

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London clinic after battling an undisclosed illness.

His health had been a subject of speculation for years, with frequent medical trips abroad.

Despite the mystery surrounding his ailment, Nigerians were often urged to pray for his recovery.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023.

His tenure was marked by economic hardship, widespread insecurity, and controversy over his prolonged absences from the country for medical treatment.

His longest medical trip lasted 104 days in 2017.

What Nigerians Will Miss: Adesina’s Perspective

In an interview on Channels Television shortly after Buhari’s death was announced, Adesina was asked what Nigerians would miss most about the late president.

Without hesitation, he replied, “His love for Nigeria; Buhari loved Nigeria.”

This statement contrasts sharply with the widespread criticism Buhari faced during his presidency.

Many Nigerians blame him for economic decline and security failures, yet Adesina insists that Buhari’s patriotism was genuine.

A Leader of Integrity and Discipline

Adesina described Buhari as a “stickler for discipline” and a man of integrity.

He recalled Buhari’s punctuality and seriousness in office, traits attributed to his military background.

“He was disciplined. If he had a meeting at 9 on the dot, he was seated.

He would not come late without apology,” Adesina said.

He also defended Buhari against corruption allegations, emphasizing that no personal corruption charge ever stuck to the former president.

“Till now, there hasn’t been one conviction against Buhari.

Allegations exist, but they don’t amount to conviction,” Adesina stressed.

    Eyes-On, Hands-Off Leadership Style

Femi Adesina revealed Buhari’s leadership style as “eyes on and hands off.”

The former president monitored his aides but allowed them freedom to execute their duties.

When failures or corruption appeared, Buhari acted decisively, removing ministers when necessary.

This approach, according to Adesina, showed Buhari’s commitment to accountability, even if some within his administration faltered.

    The Complexity of Buhari’s Legacy

Despite Adesina’s praise, Buhari’s legacy remains contested.

His administration faced criticism for worsening insecurity, economic stagnation, and alleged human rights abuses.

Many Nigerians remember the years of hardship and question whether Buhari’s “love for Nigeria” translated into effective governance.

    Personal Loyalty and Friendship

    Adesina’s tribute went beyond politics.

He described Buhari as not just a boss but a friend.

Their eight-year working relationship forged a bond that deeply affected Adesina.

This personal loyalty colors Adesina’s defense of Buhari’s record and character.

    Buhari’s Support for Key Figures

The former president also supported prominent Nigerians like Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank.

Akinwumi publicly thanked Buhari for backing his nomination and re-election, highlighting Buhari’s influence beyond Nigeria’s borders.

    Public Mourning and National Reflection

Buhari’s death has been met with official mourning.

President Bola Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning and ordered flags at half-mast.

Yet, the nation remains divided. Some mourn sincerely, while others see Buhari’s death as the end of a troubled era.

    What Nigerians Should Remember

Adesina’s reflections invite Nigerians to look beyond headlines and political rhetoric.

They challenge citizens to recognize the complexity of leadership and the human side of Buhari.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Buhari’s policies, his love for Nigeria was a defining trait, according to those who knew him best.
