In a chilling reminder of Nigeria’s insecurity crisis, unknown armed men abducted Saadu Dauda, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), along the Katsina-Ala–Takum road in Benue State over the weekend.

This latest attack exposes alarming vulnerabilities on a critical transport corridor and raises urgent questions about government action and protection for youth serving the nation.

A Violent Roadblock and a Fateful Target

Dauda was traveling in a Toyota Carina II, registration number KLD 108 AA, with six other passengers from Takum in Taraba State heading towards Katsina-Ala, Benue State.

The vehicle was stopped abruptly at a violent armed roadblock at Tsede Village, a remote boundary community between the two states.

Eyewitnesses say the gunmen robbed all occupants before forcibly abducting Dauda.

The victim’s identity was confirmed after his NYSC identification card was found in his bag left inside the abandoned vehicle.

Security operatives have reportedly launched a coordinated manhunt to rescue Dauda and apprehend his captors.

    Unanswered Questions and Official Silence

Despite the brazen nature of the attack, the Nigeria Police Force in Benue has yet to release an official statement as of this report’s filing.

The silence is troubling amid ongoing criticism that security agencies are reactive rather than proactive, especially along volatile interstate routes known for kidnappings.

The Katsina-Ala–Takum corridor has been a hotspot for criminal activity, yet no visible measures appear to deter or prevent such violent acts.

This incident starkly illustrates how citizens, including young service members like Dauda, remain exposed to armed criminal groups roaming almost freely.

The government’s inability to guarantee safety on highways vital for economic and social connectivity is a glaring failure.

Youth in Peril Amid National Service

The abduction of a NYSC member is particularly poignant because these young graduates serve the nation with hope and optimism.

The NYSC symbolizes national unity and dedication, yet members remain among the most vulnerable targets for kidnappers and bandits exploiting the security gaps.

Dauda’s ordeal will have devastating impacts on his family and community.

Beyond immediate physical danger, abductees face psychological trauma, and families endure anguish and uncertainty.

Sadly, many victims’ stories end in ransom payments with no guarantees of rescue, further emboldening kidnappers.

NYSC Denies Political Motive Behind Certificate Withholding

In an unrelated but contemporaneous controversy, the NYSC dismissed allegations that it withheld the Certificate of National Service (CNS) from corps member Ushie Rita Uguamaye due to political reasons.

The corps organization explained that Rita’s certificate was withheld for valid disciplinary reasons namely, a two-month extension of her service for failing to attend the April 2025 biometric clearance exercise.

NYSC insists this action follows standard procedures applied equally to 131 other corps members for similar infractions.

The organization urged the public not to politicize the issue and reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional mandates.

A National Crisis Ignored at Grave Risk

The abduction of Saadu Dauda is symptomatic of a broader national security crisis. Kidnappings have surged across Nigeria, fueled by porous borders, inadequate policing, and a lack of strategic intelligence.

Armed groups exploit these weaknesses with impunity, undermining public confidence in state security apparatuses.

Local communities and civil society continue to call for stronger protection measures, including better-equipped security forces, community policing initiatives, and intelligence-led operations.

Until meaningful reforms occur, more lives, particularly of young Nigerians serving the country, remain at risk.

    Government Response: Ineffective or Nonexistent?

The silence and delayed response from security agencies cast doubt on the government’s seriousness in tackling insecurity.

Politicians often express concern during public outcry but fail to translate words into action.

The lack of timely communication regarding this abduction further alienates the worried public and victims’ families.

Critics argue that authorities must prioritize rescuing Dauda and curbing attackers’ freedom of movement while ensuring preventive measures on vulnerable highways.

Accountability demands transparency about progress and clear plans to safeguard citizens.

Implications for National Cohesion and Youth Morale

Such attacks on NYSC members erode the spirit of national service and unity that the corps represents.

Young Nigerians volunteering to contribute to national development deserve protection and respect, not harassment and violence.

The continuing insecurity discourages participation, sows fear, and weakens social cohesion.

The government must urgently address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, arms proliferation, and weak law enforcement, to protect vulnerable groups and restore public trust.

Calls for Urgent Action and Accountability

    Experts and activists urge:

    • Immediate rescue efforts and improved intelligence sharing
    • Full investigation and prosecution of kidnappers
    • Enhanced security patrols along border roads and vulnerable highways
    • Public updates on efforts to ensure transparency and restore citizen confidence

The failure to act decisively invites more attacks and deepens the security crisis ravaging Nigeria.
