Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly declared his disagreement with selecting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate by consensus for the 2027 general elections.

Chukwuka Utazi, the ADC’s National Chairman, recently endorsed Atiku Abubakar, prompting Rotimi Amaechi’s sharp counter amid rising political tensions ahead of Nigeria’s crucial presidential race.

In a Friday Channels Television interview, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi insisted people must choose their leader.

“There must be a primary election in the ADC. I don’t agree with those who say there should be a consensus candidate.”

“A 49-year-old has been elected in Benin Republic. I’m the youngest candidate among all those running now, I’m 60.”

He, however, added that he is ready to support whoever eventually emerges as the ADC presidential candidate.

But prefers that the party should hold a primary election.

Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, voiced strong opposition while reacting to Atiku Abubakar’s recent statement.

Favoring consensus selection for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential flagbearer.

Atiku, ex-Vice President, urged ADC leaders to first explore consensus chances before primaries.

Sparking Amaechi’s rebuttal amid intensifying rivalries for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections.

He said, “If he wins, I will support him, but I don’t agree with those who say, consensus candidate. Let’s go and face the people, let the people choose who they want in the party.

“There must be a primary election in the ADC. I don’t agree with those who say there should be a consensus candidate.”

The only road to Aso rock for ADC is to make Atiku the candidate.

This is technically the turn of the south as it were and no northerner would want to vote another southerner who would do another 8 years in power!

So if at all they would prefer a Jonathan or just go with the incumbent so they get power back in 2031.

An obi presidency means they would have to wait till 2035. Or for obi better way for him would be is be a vice to Atiku.

Then when he’s done run for office. if he thinks the northerners would vote for him then he’s in a dream world.

The north always has the voting power in any election way more than the south.

On the zoning agreement between the North and South, Rotimi Amaechi said zoning is an internal process of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

And must not be binding in contemporary terms.

The former Governor also added that his younger age among those vying for the presidency gives him an advantage because the position needs someone who still has capacity.

“Atiku is eminently qualified to be the president of Nigeria; it is within his right to contest.

The issue of zoning or no zoning.

What former Vice President Atiku should realize is that this zoning thing is a PDP thing but I don’t agree with this south, north whatever.

What I agree with is the most qualified candidate be allowed to govern or be elected.

“I’m the youngest candidate among all those running now, I’m 60. The rest of them are in their 70s. This thing requires capacity,” he declared.
