Former President Olusegun Obasanjo states Nigerians expected miracles from him upon his 1999 election after military rule.

He said there was disappointment when he failed to transform the country overnight.

Obasanjo’s 89th Birthday: Candid Reflections in Abeokuta

At an international colloquium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, former President Olusegun Obasanjo marked his 89th birthday with candid reflections.

The event drew global attention to Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.

Obasanjo highlighted the immense expectations now placed on the current administration.

These stem from decades of hardship endured by Nigerians under tough circumstances.

Obasanjo Blames Military Rule, Economy, Decay for High Hopes

He attributed this to prolonged years of military dictatorship, crippling economic stagnation, and deep-rooted institutional decay that have plagued the nation.

“When I was elected President in 1999, the Nigerian people had endured years of military dictatorship, economic stagnation, and institutional decay.

They did not elect a president, some of them thought; they elected a miracle performer,” he said.

Delivering his address titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World,” the former president reflected on the weight of leadership.

“And when the miracle did not arrive in full measure overnight, as it never can, I could hear the murmurs of some of them.

This is the burden: to be elevated by hope and measured by time, often simultaneously,” he said.

Obasanjo emphasized the profound weight on any true leader’s shoulders.

They become the living repository of their people’s deepest hopes and dreams.

These expectations often swell beyond realistic bounds.

No single human, no matter how capable, can fully satisfy them all.

    Leadership’s Burden: Carrying Elusive Aspirations

Yet, this burden defines leadership, carrying aspirations that inspire action, even when perfection remains elusive.

“There is a particular loneliness that comes with leadership that cannot be described to anyone who has not experienced it.

It is not the loneliness of being alone, for a leader, particularly a political leader, is never alone.

There are always ministers, advisers, generals, aides, supplicants, flatterers, and critics surrounding you.

“The loneliness I speak of is the loneliness of final decision.

    Leadership’s Pinnacle: Post-Exhaustive Preparation

Leadership reaches its defining moment after exhaustive preparation.

Leaders received all briefings, laying out every fact and forecast.

Everyone made arguments, with voices clashing from all sides.

Options stand fully presented, each weighed with pros and cons.

Then, solitude descends, you alone must decide, bearing the full weight of the choice.

And your decision will affect millions of lives.

That weight does not distribute itself. It settles on one pair of shoulders, the leader’s shoulders,”he said.
