The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has escalated its campaign against corruption by declaring former Bayelsa Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, wanted.

The agency accuses Sylva of conspiring to unlawfully convert a staggering $14,859,257 from funds allocated for a national refinery project.

A High-Profile Manhunt Initiated by the EFCC

According to an official statement by EFCC spokesman Mr. Dele Oyewale, the anti-corruption commission secured a warrant for Sylva’s arrest on November 6, 2025, from a Federal High Court in Lagos.

The court, presided over by Justice D.I. Dipeolu, ordered law enforcement to bring Sylva before the commission to answer to the charges.

Justice Dipeolu’s ruling explicitly empowered the EFCC, police, or any security personnel to arrest Sylva for investigation.

This development signals a serious escalation in the legal pursuit of Governor Timipre Sylva, whose political and petroleum sector influence has long been controversial.

Allegations of Massive Fraud Shake Nigeria’s Petroleum Sector

The charges relate to alleged dishonest conversion of $14.8 million invested by Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

The funds were intended for Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited to construct a refinery vital to Nigeria’s energy future.

This alleged conspiracy not only threatens refinery capacity but also exposes major oversight and accountability lapses in government projects.

Public Outcry and Questions Over Political Impunity

The announcement ignited strong reactions across Nigeria, with many citizens expressing outrage over perceived elite impunity.

Sylva’s case is seen as another test of President Tinubu’s stated commitment to fighting corruption without fear or favor.

Critics argue that previous high-profile figures evaded justice, encouraging corrupt behaviors at the highest levels.

Now, with EFCC’s intensified crackdown, some question whether real change will be realized or if this is merely a selective political vendetta.

EFCC Seeks Public Help to Locate Sylva

EFCC has appealed to the public for information on Sylva’s whereabouts, urging Nigerians to come forward and assist law enforcement.

They emphasized that anyone with useful tips should contact EFCC’s zonal directorates, police stations, or other security agencies nationwide.

This move shows EFCC’s determination to arrest Timipre Sylva and warns others involved in similar corruption.

The Road to Justice: Legal and Political Implications

While the warrant marks a major breakthrough for anti-corruption efforts, it also raises complex legal questions.

How will Sylva’s defense address these charges?

Can the EFCC navigate potential political interference? Will this case set a precedent for prosecuting wealthy, powerful Nigerians?

The controversy deepens as Sylva remains elusive, and many await updates on the manhunt’s progress.
