Akwa Ibom State Government will on Saturday flag off construction of a multi-billion naira Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mass Transit Terminal in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The ultra-modern transport hub, sited along the Goodluck Jonathan Boulevard, is designed to serve as the central nerve for the state’s planned fleet of over 100 CNG-powered buses aimed at slashing transport costs for residents.
A project brief obtained by our correspondent reveals the terminal will be more than a park, featuring a CNG filling station, a maintenance workshop, an automated car wash, a shopping arcade, a restaurant, and a VIP lounge.
It will also house a police outpost, an administrative block, and a dedicated training school for drivers and technicians.
The project aligns with the Federal Government’s push for a national transition to CNG as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol.
By building its own filling station and terminal, Akwa Ibom positions itself to control the entire value chain for its mass transit scheme, potentially insulating its operations from nationwide fuel price shocks.
The flag-off ceremony is scheduled for 4:00 PM on Saturday, January 24, 2026.
It is expected to be attended by top state officials, traditional rulers, and transport union leaders.
