Ibom Air passenger remanded, assault sparks controversy

In a development stirring heated debate, a Magistrate Court in Ogba, Lagos, remanded Comfort Emmanson.

A passenger on an Ibom Air flight, following her alleged assault on airline officials during a flight from Uyo to Lagos. 

The court ordered that she remain in Kirikiri Correctional Centre until October 6, 2025, after Emmanson was arraigned on a five-count charge including assault.

Willful damage to property, and refusal to obey lawful instructions aboard the aircraft.

Details of the Allegations

Court documents reveal that Emmanson reportedly caused a scene by shouting loudly and verbally abusing the flight crew. 

She allegedly refused to disembark after landing actions that disrupted not only the flight but also airport operations.

Physical assault accusations are grave.

Emmanson allegedly slapped the crew member Juliana Edward, struck her cheeks.

And hit another passenger, Jokpame Segun, in the face with her slippers. 

Further allegations include damage to an aircraft divider curtain estimated at $2,500 and tearing a braided wig worth N110,000 belonging to a crew member.

These acts are claimed to contravene the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Byelaw, 2005, and multiple sections of the Lagos State Criminal Code, 2015.

Public and Social Media Reaction

Videos showing the escalated confrontation surfaced on social media, depicting Emmanson in a fierce verbal exchange with flight attendants, and later with airport security, amplifying public scrutiny.

Ibom Air issued a statement clarifying that the controversy began prior to takeoff in Uyo.

As Emmanson refused to switch off her mobile phone, violating standard aviation safety protocols. 

Another passenger was reportedly compelled to turn off the phone, which triggered Emmanson’s anger.

Upon arrival in Lagos, she allegedly assaulted the flight purser who had earlier requested compliance with safety rules, prompting her subsequent arrest and handover to the police.

The airline asserted that Emmanson’s conduct posed a serious threat to the safety of the crew, passengers, and aircraft integrity. 

Ibom Air has since imposed a lifetime travel ban on Comfort Emmanson, refusing her further access to its flights.

Questioning the Handling of the Situation

Further controversy emerged when the Federal Government, after consultation with aviation stakeholders, ordered the withdrawal of the case against Emmanson following her remorse and appeals from various quarters. 

The police withdrew the charges and the airline lifted the lifetime ban.
