The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has issued a stark warning about the escalating cost of food items and its devastating impact on Nigerians’ health.

On September 14, during the National Food Is Medicine Day commemoration in Umuahia, the union called on policymakers to treat affordable nutrition as a national health priority.

NUJ Chairman in Abia State, Chidi Asonye, highlighted the growing hardship families face in securing nutritious meals amid rising food prices.

The warning emphasized that neglecting nutrition in policy discussions threatens to aggravate chronic health conditions nationwide.

Food Beyond Commerce: A Call for Urgent Policy Reforms

Asonye condemned the prevailing attitude that views food primarily as a market commodity rather than a vital tool in disease prevention.

He insisted that affordable and balanced nutrition must become a cornerstone of public health strategies.

“Many households are struggling to afford balanced meals, and this is fueling malnutrition and diet-related illnesses,” Asonye stated forcefully.

“Policy intervention is no longer optional; it is a necessity.”

The call challenges government complacency that has allowed food prices to skyrocket without meaningful checks, deepening health risks for the vulnerable population.

Inflation and Food Security: A Deadly Mix

Nigeria’s ongoing food security crisis was described by Asonye as a ticking public health time bomb.

Inflation and inadequate food distribution have pushed prices beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.

He warned that if immediate actions are not taken, the country’s increasing malnutrition rates and diet-related diseases will overwhelm health services.

This crisis threatens not just individual wellness but the economic productivity of the nation.

“A nation cannot grow healthy without addressing fundamental issues of nutrition,” Asonye declared during the event.

NUJ’s Grassroots Advocacy: Combatting Hunger and Malnutrition

In response, journalists under the Abia NUJ banner have launched an ambitious crusade targeting hunger, malnutrition, unemployment, and insecurity.

This advocacy aims to pressure policymakers into enacting sustainable food policies aligned with global public health campaigns.

The union vows to sustain the campaign until measurable and effective government action is implemented to safeguard citizens’ right to nutrition and health.

“The media will no longer be silent while our people suffer preventable illnesses caused by food insecurity and poverty,” Asonye affirmed.

    Critical Voices Question Government Priorities

The NUJ’s strong stance has stirred controversy, as many Nigerians question why food.

A basic human necessity, remains elusive despite the nation’s resources.

Critics accuse governments of misplaced priorities and failure to regulate inflation and stabilize markets.

Social commentators have criticized the lack of transparency and accountability in governance.

Aalleging that corruption and policy neglect exacerbate the hunger crisis.

This urgent call from the NUJ has added fuel to debates on social media and civic spaces about the state’s responsibility to ensure food affordability.

The Health Costs of Neglect: A Public Emergency in the Making

Experts warn that malnutrition and diet-related illnesses, fueled by high food prices, are quietly becoming a public health emergency.

Nigeria is already battling rising cases of hypertension, diabetes, and other preventable conditions linked to poor diets.

Children and vulnerable groups suffer most, with increased risks of stunted growth and weakened immunity.

The NUJ’s statement underscores how unchecked food inflation deepens these health disparities.

“It is alarming that in 2025, many families must choose between healthcare and putting food on the table,” Asonye lamented.

International Comparisons: Where Nigeria Falls Short

Globally, nutrition is increasingly recognized as a pillar of health policy.

Countries making bold moves to integrate food security into national health plans report improvements in life expectancy and reduced medical costs.

In contrast, Nigeria’s inaction and fragmented responses threaten to isolate the country from these positive trends.

The NUJ’s advocacy aligns with international movements emphasizing “Food is Medicine” as a public health imperative.

What Needs to Change: Pathways to Food Affordability and Health

Experts and the NUJ recommend urgent steps, including price control measures, investment in agriculture, and social safety nets to protect vulnerable households.

Policymakers must also improve market regulation and supply chain logistics to reduce wastage and curb speculative pricing.

Sustainable food policies should prioritize nutritious food availability, not just calorie intake, to address growth retardation and chronic diseases.

A Test for Nigeria’s Leadership and Will

The NUJ’s powerful message is a direct indictment of government failure and a hard-hitting appeal to protect public health through affordable nutrition.

This issue transcends economic policy, touching on human dignity and the right to a healthy life for millions.

The question remains whether Nigeria’s leaders will heed this urgent call or continue the dangerous neglect of their people’s well-being.

With food prices climbing and health risks escalating.

The government’s response in the coming months will shape Nigeria’s health landscape for years to come.
